Hi All - My Husband, our 20 year-old daughter, and I will be spending 3 days in Venice during Carnival (Thurs 2/27-Sun 3/1). We will be staying at the Ruzzini Palace Hotel. I am looking for any recommendations for anything that is 'must do' during this time including any dinner shows, restaurants, parties we should book (we might be too late) - Also wanted to know if we should be prepared to dress in costumes?
I have a friend who goes every year and this is what I know.
Yes, you can dress as elaborate as you like or just wear a colorful wig, cape over your monochrome clothes with a mask.
The diehards are out at the crack of dawn, dressed ready for you to take their picture. They pose, walk around, and pose some more.
One day there is a parade though the city but I’m not sure which day. I would have to ask my friend.
I know the first year she went she just wore a cape, wig, and mask but took a massive amount of pictures. Every year since then her costumes have become more elaborate and expensive. It wasn’t until the third year that she attended a party and had to rent a costume because it was themed. Also, you have to pay to attend some parties.
She is going again this year but never shows anyone her costume until it pops up on Facebook.
Have fun!
The last day, and the big day, is the day before Ash Wednesday, Tuesday, March 4, You can spend big bucks and go to one of the Carnival Balls and rent costumes. or you can just buy a mask and bop around town.
Here is a site (one of many) with all the events.

I was there about 10 years ago for opening weekend, which starts 3 weeks in advance. Very good experience.
