We will be in Tuscany this month just in time for Carnavale in Viareggio. Tickets are available on line for 22 euros each. Since this is a parade along the waterfront, anyone know what the tickets cover? Trying to decide if we really want to go as it is a distance from the town we are staying in. Has anyone attended this event?
I’ve attended many years ago the last time. It was free in those days and I don’t know what the tickets are for now. Maybe they blocked off the promenade and allow only people with tickets to get in. It’s basically a parade of huge floats with allegorical figures on it. I’m sure you can take a look on YouTube to get an idea of what it looks like.
It's not just one parade, but a series of events and exhibitions from 2/4 to 2/25 which includes 6 parades. The official program in English is here: https://viareggio.ilcarnevale.com/en/programma-eventi/parades/
There's a good article with some travel advice here: https://www.discovertuscany.com/tuscany-events/viareggio-carnival.html
The parade area is restricted to ticket holders. There's a map on this site in Italian showing the route and the access points: https://www.intoscana.it/it/articolo/carnevale-viareggio-2023-biglietti-corsi/
There are specific date and open date tickets, as well more expensive grandstand tickets with and without reserved seats. Since there may be as many as 80,000. people attending, I would expect not everyone will have an advance ticket.
