Will be touring the east coast of Italy (Venice to Pescara) by rail but want to take some day trips from Pescara to the Gran Sasso by autobus to do some day hikes. Does anyone have any suggestions of which towns would be good starting points? Already know where to find bus schedules but not the towns. Thanks!

L'Aquila is the best location to explore the Gran Sasso.

L'Aquila is a town on the far side of the Gran Sasso. Castelli is sweet, but not much hiking available without a car. Castel del Monte is a lovely small town, and further on the same road is Rocca Calascio. It is a terrific hike from the road to the castle.
Just up the road form Forca di Valle is a nice hike with a view of the Corno Grande, but I think you'd need a car. Why not rent a car for a day or two out of Pescara so you can explore Abruzzo? Here's a little info from our two trips to the area. Three posts from GoodDayRome.com.
