Car versus Train - Tuscany to Levanto to Florence

I'll be spending two weeks in Italy. Two nights in Venice, 5 nights in Siena, 5 nights in Levanto, 1 night in Florence.

Taking train from Venice to Florence and picking up a car and driving to Siena. Currently have the car for 10 days and plan on driving to Levanto. Our trip to Levanto will be mostly to visit Cinque Terre so we won't need the car during that part of the trip.

Difference in price between renting a car for 5 days vs 10 days is about $250. It will add one hour of travel time and probably another hour of delay to drop off the car and ride the train.

Question: Would you drive back to Florence and drop off the car and take train to Levanto or would you drive to Levanto and back to Florence?

I would only keep the car for the period where train doesn't work. You don't necessarily need to drop the car in the same city and there's usually no extra charge to drop within the same country. Do you need the car to get to a hotel outside of Siena or only when you start to daytrip out from Siena? If you don't need the car immediately, or even if you do, you could pick up in Siena. Then, either leave it in Siena or drop it in La Spezia, from where you can take a direct train to Levanto. If you need the car as far as Levanto, then drop it at the city where you will fly home, which I'm not sure is on the list above.
