Car travel to Cinque Terre from Tuscany

My wife and I have just planned and booked our second trip to Italy. In one leg of our journey, we'll be spending 3 nights in Montalcino with a rental. When we leave Montalcino, our intentions are to drive and drop our car in La Spezia, with a potential for a pit stop to check out the Tower in Pisa (why not). We've already set up the rental and confirmed the drop location in La Spezia, where we will take a local train to our accommodation in Manarola. Does anyone have feedback on this plan? Would you stop in Pisa?

Thanks!

Driving to La Spezia is a perfect plan. The number of train changes you'd need and the slow service in that region make driving a better choice. If you have time, why not stop in Pisa? With 3 hours you can easily see the tower and have lunch.

I made the same trip 3 years ago, your plan is spot on. I would only spend the day, no need to stay overnight. If you want to go to the top of the tower make reservations well in advance. You don't mention when you are planning your trip but the spring and summer will be very crowded.

Have a great time.

That sounds like the best plan to me. A lot of people deride Pisa, but i found the Field of Miracles lovely and really enjoyed it regardless of the building issues of the bell tower. It is right on your way. Don't leave anything on view in the car, and don't open the trunk after you park. Take all your valuables with you and do all the rearranging before you park.

Enjoy. Can I go with you?
