We are flying into Milan and then driving to Villa D'este, how long is the drive? From there we are driving to Avignon (again drive time?) We will then drive back to Milan(drive time?) to fly home. Are there any other alternatives to driving (train, plane?) We are most concerned with ease of transportation. We are spending 4days at Villa D'este and 4 in Avignon. Thanks for any advice!
Cynthia-we use viamichelin.com to plan driving routes for our Europe trips. You should be able to plug in your departure and arrival cities to get the answers to your questions about drive times. Then you can compare with the ease of flying between your major destinations (ie Milan and Avignon) and renting cars out of the airport.
Train travel in Italy is super easy. Renting a car in Italy is more hassle than I usually want to deal with. Good luck.
You mean Avignon, France, correct? Train travel is easy, but getting from Italy to Avignon involves quite a bit of time and, as I recall from checking into it years ago, at least one transfer. Yes, of course you could fly. Check into the in-Europe low-cost airlines, such as EasyJet and Ryan Air. Don't know that I would do that. I don't think I would do to those two destinations on the same trip, though, either, just due to hassle of getting between the two locations. You could also use google maps to estimate drive time from Villa d'Este to Avignon; google maps says about 6 1/2 hours.
