car travel in Italy

Three of us are flying into Rome(two nights) and from there visiting Naples(three nights) (Pompeii sidetrip) then Amalfi,(one night) then staying somewhere outside of Sorrento(one night) and then back to Rome(one night) It's a package so we are not flexible about overnight locations. Since the trip is a combination of city and country, we don't know whether to use the car we have already rented with the package or just to use public transport. After reading advice on this site, it seems like driving is a hassle. Our concern is getting around the outlying areas around Amalfi and Sorrento. We'd be glad to hop on small minibuses if they exist or is there some combination of car/public transportation that would be ideal? None of us have ever been to Italy! Can anybody advise us? Thanks so much.

Doug,

I think you have already helped. What I sent was just our overnight accomodations. We want to do some hiking (path of the gods) visit Ravello, Positano. We'd love to get off the beaten track for awhile and see some interior beauty and small town charm. We just weren't sure that bus service was readily available. Any other suggestions would be most wonderful!

Nancy - There are some hiking paths in the hills above the Amalfi Coast. I don't know much about how they are organized or mapped, but I had a great afternoon walking from Positano up to the small towns above. One is Montepertuso, named for the hole in the mountain ridge nearby. There were trails continuing on.

If you posted a question about hiking along the Amalfi Coast, I'm sure you'd get more helpful suggestions.

Nancy - where are you staying and what "outlying areas" do you hope to see? Rome, Naples and the Amalfi Coast do not require a rental car and, in fact, could provide the most terrifying driving experiences of your life. Naples is connected to Sorrento by a train that stops in Pompeii. Sorrento is connected to Amalfi by a SITA bus. There really aren't "outlying areas" around Sorrento and Amalfi because they sit between steep mountains and the sea. You can see Positano and Praiano by the bus.

I'd be curious to see the details of the package. Could you post a link?

Excellent idea! As yo can see, I'm new at this, but it's all very exciting! I have to remember that we will also learn as we go. Thanks again...
