Car/Train Tickets

Please help. Am becoming overwhelmed with the amount of information on cars and trains. Here is what we are trying to do. Please offer advice if you can: We want to pick up a car at the Rome airport when we arrive on a Friday. We are going to drive the car to Volterra and explore some of Tuscany on Saturday. On Sunday we want to drop off the car (where I don't know) and take a train to Venice where we will be staying for three days. We then want to take a train from Venice back to Rome where we will be staying for three days until we leave. We are not looking for comments on the itinerary, but the transportation logistics. How would you piece this together? When to buy train tickets, from there or from here? Combine the car rental with rail pass or do separately? Please help if you can. Thanks in advance Laura

We are using Volterra as a home base so we will be returning the car to Florence or Pisa airport. Not sure which is easier.

Laura, Hard to tell you where to drop the car if we don't know which towns you'll be near...some are easier than others. Keep in mind the driver will need an international drivers license, available at AAA $15.00. Train, point to point tickets are much less expensive than a railpass. Trenitalia.it will give you all times the trains leave. What we have done in the past is print out this schedule and take it with us so we have an idea of when the next train leaves if we miss the 1st one. Generally purchase tickets before we leave the station for our next leg of the journey.
