Car theft along Amalfi Coast?

Hello! We are renting a car in Rome to drive down to Amalfi Coast and Pompei. We'll have luggage with us in our rental car during multiple stops (at Amalfi during a lunch-time cooking class, at Positano while we wander the town, at Pompei while we visit the ruins). Any concerns with car break-ins if we have suitcases visible in the back?

I would never leave my car with luggage visible. We have left luggage in a car but only completely hidden in the trunk. We took all valuables (passports, medications, credit cards ect) on our person and organized that before leaving so that did not go into the trunk in public. I have done this in Greece, Italy, and Portugal.

Yes, yes, yes!
But you probably won't find any parking , at least in Positano. Please do some research on the congestion and poor driving conditions, from Naples thru the AC. The area has been neglected for decades, so moving about takes time and patience. ( This is not like moving about in the rest of Italy.) Public transportation in the area is also poor. Many folks use expensive private drivers as the least frustrating option. You need to be prepared for the realities on the ground, if you are to enjoy the area.
When is this trip, and how many people?
Safe travels!

Buy cable locks like these to secure luggage to the car (you should be able to tie them to some hooks.

Take valuables or anything you don’t want to share with the local community with you.

Finding parking in Amalfi may be a challenge. There is one at the ferry docks and one at the marina, but limited spaces and often full.

Positano has a few guarded parking lots. Your stuff will be safe there. That is assuming the lots aren’t full.

No street parking, and whatever you find will be very tight spaces. Sorry Italy is not America. Not a car friendly country.

Pompei parking lots are not guarded. It is probably the place most at risk. I don’t know what to tell you. See if you can back the car against a tree or a wall. However one can always reach the trunk from the rear passenger seats since most cars are hatchback or wagon/SUV.. Tie them up with a cable.

Is there a reason why you can’t go by train? Rome to Salerno then local buses or ferries works best.

It's not recommended to have visible luggage in your car in the region. On the other hand, traffic and parking is so crazy that it may be too visible for thieves to risk it. Pompeii may be the exception to that.

You don't mention where you'll be staying for the Amalfi Coast portion of your visit, you might be better off parking at the hotel and taking buses, trains and ferries for your days there. Also, when is the trip? During the peak tourist months, the government restricts vehicles driving along the Amalfi Coast. For example, vehicles with a license plate with an even number can only drive on even days of the month and odd plate numbers on the odd days (or visa versa).

*If your thoughts are this is a one day trip from Rome then I'd reconsider your itinerary because it's doubtful that you'll squeeze it all in.

We had friends who lost everything while parking in Pompeii…. luggage, medicine, computers. They were seasoned travelers who took a risk and lost.

Appreciate all of the input. The trip is last week of April. Another option we're considering is renting lockers at the Rome Termini station to leave our suitcases, and then we'll just have a small backpack for each family member for the 2 night stay in Ravello/Sorrento. I'll look into the even/odd day driving situation. Thank you!

Aren’t the ferry-boats running at that time of year? I’d do a day trip from Naples to Pompeii and afterwards travel by ferry for the rest. The 2-lane road along the coast can be a long winding park lot at times.
