Car suggested for family of 5 while staying in Malcesine?

Would hiring a car while staying for 3 nights in Malcesine be recommended? We plan on venturing to the north and down to the south but nothing in land. I have three kids, ages 10, 8, 5 if that makes any difference. We will be traveling to Venice after our stay at Garda and may want to stop in Verona if time allows. I haven't decided if driving or train would be better for this option? Would love to hear any options or thoughts on this.

A car is a good option. The train does not go to Malcesine and you may want to go up in the hills surrounding the lakes as it is very pleasant up there and good views from above. I would return the car in Verona and travel to Venice by train, though.
