Can someone recommend a reputable private car or limo service from a Rome hotel to a Sorrento hotel? Approximately how much is the service?
Thank you
Allie

That will be expensive and we don't have a company to recommend. Marozzi bus company runs one direct, morning bus per day between Roma Tiburtina bus station and Sorrento (€18.50 per person), and a second, afternoon departure through September. If you take a train from Roma Termini station to Napoli Centrale (about $55 per person in standard class), then you can connect to Sorrento by cheap, crowded local commuter train, or take a cab from there for about €100; agree the price before departure.
Give Romacab an email. They would probably do it. I am guessing it could be close to $500.
Most will charge at least €300-350.
But try www.viator.com and see what you can find for less.

Thanks everyone!
I didn't realize the transfer to be so costly! Good to know.
Allie, this is like a car transfer from NYC to Baltimore, MD. It's not overpriced, it's too far to hire a car and driver for. Most people take the fast, modern train from Rome to Naples first, buying early enough to get a discounted ticket. Then, there's a commuter train for 2.8 Euros, or a car service for 100 Euros.
Tim, good way to look at it. thanks for the info!
Allie, you can get there so much faster - and less expensively - using the trains. The bus takes nearly 4 hours - and that's not allowing for possible heavy traffic - where one of the fast trains to Naples takes a little over an hour, and the Circumvesuvia from there to Sorrento (there's a train every 1/2 hour) takes a little over an hour as well.
There is the Curreri bus which runs once an hour from the Napoli airport to Sorrento but that would, of course, mean getting from Napoli Centrale to the airport:
Kathy, thanks for the info!
You're welcome! If you do decide to take the train, you'll want to take it from Rome to Napoli Centrale: Naples' main train station. The station for the Circumvesuviana train to Sorrento - Garibaldi - is connected to Centrale: follow the signs.
The Circumvesuviana schedule is here (click on Napoli- Sorrento):

If you are planning to visit Pompeii, this is also the train you will take: your station will be Pompei S. Villa Misteri, and it's right in front of the entrance to the ruins; it takes roughly 30 minutes or so from Sorrento.
The Circumvesuviana is a bare-bones commuter train that is short on creature comforts but endurable for the time you'll be on it! As it's also very heavily used by tourists going to/from Naples and Pompeii, it can also be a magnet for shifty fingers so keep your valuables where those cannot reach them, and a good hand on your luggage at station stops; you'll be fine!
Kathy, appreciate the details!
Hey Allie! We took the train from Rome to Naples. On the way there, we took the Circumvesuviana. It was logistically easy. Time wise, it took way longer than advertised (close to two hours) and it did break down which added an extra 45 minutes. We were standing with our luggage for most of it because it was quite crowded. Not the worse travel situation in the world and definitely cost effective. But it also wasn't the most comfortable.
On the way back, since there were four of us, we hired a private car to go from Sorrento to Naples and then take the train. We used "Amalfi Coast Private Destination Tours". They charged us a little over 100 euro although that was a with a discount since we took another tour with them. In my opinion, that was Euro well spent. And we were pleased with the service on both tours.
Regardless, enjoy Sorrento! It is a gorgeous city.
Kristen, thx for sharing your experience! Will consider combination of train and car and call Amalfi tours to set something up.
Can't wait!
This well thought of company charges 70 euro for 1-3 passenger from Naples to Sorrento.
Thank you, Linda!
