How much time should we allow for returning a car to FCO? I assume it's a bit more time consuming than the process at a US airport. Is there a significant difference between Hertz and Europcar in that regard? We'll be retuning rather early on a Saturday morning if that makes a difference.

We didn’t really have any more complicated process turning in a car at FCO than in the US. Easy peasy. We used Europcar.
We returned Hertz to FCO and it was similar to a US return. Fairly quick and then walked to the terminal. For us, no more than 30 minutes. Directions into the return area were very clear. Give yourself an hour and you should be in great shape.

I usually stay at the Hilton at the airport and return it the night before, then walk to the Hilton on the skywalk.
I returned my Europcar rental in less than 15 minutes. I photographed the car, they examined it, signed off no damage and I was on my way. Of course if a number of people are ahead of you, it will take more time.
To reaffirm what was stated above, it has always been a quick transaction.

That's what we did. I returned the car the afternoon before. Hilton provides a free shuttle bus to downtown Rome. They drop you off and pick you up at the Victor Emmanuel Monument, which is convenient to a number of sites. Piazza Navona, the Pantheon, Trevi Fountain and the Coliseum are all a short walk away.
Thanks to everyone for your replies, we’ll be driving in that morning from points north, and I’ll allow some extra time for car return. I hope i can be of some value to other forum members after our trip!
