I found a B&B half hour outside of Florence and they recomended hiring a taxi to get from the train station.I thought that would get really expensive. I was opting to rent a car instead for our four day trip in Tuscany. Are there cheap car rentals, and is is worth it to have our freedom to roam around.
We stayed at this B&B just outside of Florence and Europcar rental is just 2 blocks away. Was really convenient. Bus stops there also and you could take the bus from the train station right to their B & B.

Rosie, if you're considering renting a car in Florence, you may find this topic of some interest
Why you don't want to drive into Florence
Some travelers have accidentally violated the Florence ZTL's when picking up or returning their rental car to the train station or return locations near there.
When that happens, months after your return you're charged sometimes hundreds of dollars on your credit card by the car rental company, the charge to find your address and give it to the police, and then you get separate $125 fines in the mail from the Italian authorities.
Knowing this, in the last year some travelers who absolutely had to pick up a rental car in Florence, but are arriving by train, have been taking a taxi from the front curb of the train station to the airport (it's relatively close) or other pick up location that is well away from the Florence ZTL's that blanket the historic center of the city.
Also, driving getting out of the airport presents easier driving for getting onto a main road and getting the heck out of Dodge...I mean...Florence.
