Clare, I have rented there a few times and it was easy enough as long as I was leaving Florence. I just hopped on the freeway and went on to my destination. I call or email or check on priceline all the car rental companies and go with the cheapest. Most are manual, so keep that in mind. Last time I did have a little problem since I rented from Budget...and there was nothing marked as such. After a little stress I found out that in Florence, Budget is Avis! Made no sense...If you are staying in Florence, do that first, then get your car to move on. Its a pain to have in the city.

Clare, Also check Kemwel and Auto Europe for your rental car. Prices change daily, so when you see a price you like, book asap
Be advised you also need an international drivers license or face the risk of a VERY large ticket. They are available at AAA for around $15.00

Have not rented a car from the Florence airport, but will do it on this trip. We always rent it near the train station, and every time we return it, get a traffic ticket for entering the 'Locals Only' zone. We keep thinking we are going to do fine, and at the last minute, get in a bind and six months later receive a traffic citation. Someone recommended to us to rent it at the airport in Florence, and from there will drive to the Casentino Valley in Tuscany.
Hope this information will help you and avoid traffic fines in the heart of Florence.

Joann, yes I also read to rent and return at the Florence airport to avoid a surprise later. Rick Steves through the back door was good for that type of information. The area that good? That you are going back again?

I can heartily endorse returning a car at the florence airport. very easy and no ZTL risk. Can't imagine doing it any other way. It's worth paying the airport surcharge up front to make sure you have no surprises a year or something after your trip!

Just a few more thoughts about the car. AutoEurope and Kemwel are affiliated with each other. They are car brokers and will book your car with companies such as Hertz, Avis and Europcar. If you can, request a diesel for better gas mileage. Diesel is available at all gas stations. Also, sometimes they offer a free GPS if you rent a car for a certain amount of time. And, it is less expensive to rent a car for more than 3-4 days. You can check out the prices on the AutoEurope and Kemwel website. What you will find out about the Tuscany and Chianti region is that there is so much to see and do you can't possibly see everything on one trip. That is one reason why we all return. The region seems to call us back. You'll see when you're there. Have fun on your trip.
