Car rental woes and a warning.

Rental Car Warning.

We recently booked a car rental in Italy. I thought I would share what happened to us and a word of warning. We booked a car through Auto-Europe, a large wholeseller of rentals. They were great to work. We booked a small 4 door compact with AC and a manual transmission. We ended up with reservation at rental company called EuropCar. It was picked up in Rome and dropped off in Venice 15 days later. When we picked it up, I requested our rental car as reserved and specifically asked for NO upgrades. I was assured that our rental car was as reserved and it did not come with any additional fees or charges. (Mistake #1) The car was rented on Festa della Repubblica (a national holiday) so the rental counter was closing at noon. As a service to the other customers I did not take the time to read and translate the entire rental agreement as it was close to closing time. After a quick glance over the mice type and balance due that day, the rental agent said to "sign here" so I did as requested.

Over two weeks later, we dropped of the car in Venice. The attendant checked over the car, the mileage, and checked the gas then told us that we were good to go. I asked “don’t we owe a remainder for the road tax?” He assured us that it was all included in the original charge and we didn’t owe anything else. I asked about final paperwork. The attendant said, since I didn’t own anything, and that they would send me an email in a day or two with the final paperwork attached. This sounded strange to me but he said that this was the way they always did it. (Mistake #2- I should have asked for the final paperwork.)

We flew home from Venice. Two weeks later a charge of $184 shows up on my credit card. I called EuropCar and they said it was an added charge for being given an upgraded class of rental car. I protested the charge stating that my car was not upgraded and asked for it to be removed. Several days later I got an email from them stating that this charge will be maintained as “you have signed the rental agreement accepting this charge.” I then called Auto-Europe, since they were company I booked the rental through. Since they would have more clout with EuropCar, I asked them to intercede on my behalf. A week later I got another email from EuropCar stating that upon further review,(Thank you Auto Europe!) they would be refunding me $121 for the upgrade charge. The remaining $63 was about what I had estimated for the road tax due so it was now correct.

My recommendations from this story are….
(1) book through a consolidator. Auto Europe was great to work with and handled my problem promptly.
(2) I was mislead at the rental counter and at the drop off location. Always, always, always read the fine print.
(3) Always get a hard copy of the rental agreement when you turn the car in.

Yep--AutoEurope has been having problems with EuropeCar this year--as the AutoEurope rep confided to me as he removed a charge for a one-way rental. He said they've been having a lot of problems like mine and yours. Robert from Portland had the same experience as I did and had AE remove the charge too.
So good warning. People review your vouchers and don't hesitate to let AutoEurope go to bat for you.

You did the right thing and you aren't the only one this year. EuropeCar has been annoying with this new upsell strategy, but what they did to you was fraud.

You need to post this in General Europe since they affects more counties and agencies than just yours. We had our problems at the Bordeaux train station, but the rep assured me the problems were more widespread.

FYI, very few people read through the fine print when initialing car rental agreements, so I don't think it's so unusual that you didn't read it--though I'm sure one or two on the Forum will chime in that they always read every line. Mailing the final charges later is standard practice but they have always given us the choice to get an immediate print out, as well.

Glad you had a good outcome and are warning others.

I never book through a consolidator.... but glad they stood up for yu. However, if I were to book with them I woud insist not going with a company that has this kind of a bad reputation. Why doesn't AE dump them?

I have rented tons of times and always direct with the rental company and thankfully have never had any problems yet.

TK--the advantages of using AutoEurope is if there is a dispute and it's less expensive. Over the sixteen years I've used them, they've intervened four times. Two were honest mistakes; the others not so honest.

Also, you pay lower TVA if you book using US dollars. I've even booked via cell phone using the European-800 number while standing in the agency in France. When the voucher came through a couple minutes later, the French clerk was impressed at how much less it cost than renting over the counter.

One of the worst things about renting a car in Europe is dealing with the rental car agencies. Too often the level of customer service is low and/or they are just looking for a way to stick you with extra charges. I have had some pretty bad experience too. I always book through Autoeurope (alhtough their customer service has also declined in recent years) so it's good to know they can assist. I have driven in eight or nine countries in Europe, but the more experienced I get as a traveler, the more I look for way to avoid renting a car.

We booked through Autoeurope in Italy last year. Also with Europcar we were downsized to a car barely able to take us all. I generally don't like using middle men for booking but Autoeurope were great. One email to them and they organised a refund for the difference in car price, plus the one way and extra driver fees for the inconvenience (Europcar in France were far worse and again Autoeurope came to the rescue)

Glad to read that Auto-Europe was able to help you out. We are renting a car in Siena for our trip in September. We used Auto- Europe because I had heard a lot of good things about them.

If I ever rent a car it will be through AutoEurope. However, taking the trains eliminates 100% of the hassle of crooked rental counter practices. I've rented a car a few times in Europe and have been burned by the experience almost every time.
