So - I am leaving Venice and going to Val di Pesa (just south of Florence) for 5 days, then further south (just south of Siena) for another 5 days and then to Milan to fly home. I'm thinking of renting a car in Venice and driving the rest of the trip. Is there any reason I should get/drop off the car anywhere different to avoid the forbidden zones and to avoid driving in cities? If so where would you suggest? thanks sue
No reason not to keep the car for the rest of the trip after Venice. You'll need a car to get to the Val di Pesa or anywhere outside of a big city. When you drive to Milan the day before flying back, if you return the car at the airport, find a hotel outside of the city, maybe close to Malpensa. Milan's traffic is congested at rush hour.
When we are flying home from Malpensa we return our car to Stazione Centrale and spend the last night in Milano. Getting to the airport in plenty of time is easy using the Milan Shuttle bus. There is also a direct train to Malpensa that leaves from Stazione Centrale. We like Milano, so staying there is a nice experience for us. Buon viaggio,
