We haven't decided on where to rent a car in either Siena or Bologna to tour the Tuscany region. After Tuscany, we are going to Positano. From Siena,we thought about driving to Orvieto to return the car and then taking the train to Naples. We drive to Orvieto on Sunday & it looks like rental agencies close at noon. Or should we take the train from Siena to Orvieto & then to Naples. Will this be a full day(6/7 hrs) of travel?
Bologna is not in Tuscany and is quite a drive to get there, whereas Siena is smack in the middle. You will not find many car rental agencies open on Sunday at all, mostly at major train stations and at airports, and those that are open will close at noon. Tour the Tuscany region with Siena as a base and then take the train to Orvieto and then on to Naples.
Thanks, for the info. You helped me make the decision to take the train. I realize Bologna isn't in Tuscany but we thought of getting the car there & driving to Tuscany Region. We are staying at an agriturisimo in Siena. Which is easier to get the car in Bologna or Siena? Thanks.
I rented last May from the Bologna train station. It was easy enough. The rental agencies are scattered within 2 blocks of the station (easy walking distance). Traffic there is a bear during rush hour though. They do have a ZTL, but as long as you don't venture inside the ring road around the central district, you will be OK. You WILL need a good GPS with European maps preinstalled. Learn how to use it before you leave. I'm not familiar with the location of car rentals or their hours of operation in Siena. I would think that it would be easy enough there as well. I rented in Florence and drove to Siena.
Thanks for your help
