Car rental Rome - Tuscany hillside - Florence

I am looking for advice on where to pick up and drop off our rental car. We are flying into Rome and will stay there for a couple of days. We plan to pick up the rental car just before leaving Rome (our hotel is near the Pantheon), and then we will drive to the Tuscany hillside towns. Where would be a good place to pick up our rental car, taking into account the convenience of getting there from our hotel and also an easy exit from Rome?

Also, we will need to drop off the rental car in Florence a few days later, before getting on the train to go to Venice. Where would you recommend dropping it off, taking into account we'll need to catch a train but also that we don't want to drive into Florence any more than necessary.

Thank you!

We are also picking up a rental car in Rome, at the Termini train station. It was the closest pick up point nearest our place, also near the Pantheon. Sorry but I can't help with a Florence drop off point, maybe there's one near their train station? Enjoy your trip!

Thanks! I was eyeing the Termini location as well but wanted to be sure it would be relatively easy to get out of the city without worrying about ZTLs or being stuck in city traffic. Any insight on that?

We did just the opposite two years ago, picking up our car in Florence and then dropping it off when we got to Rome. I hadn't been there before, and the most popular advice I got from people about driving in Rome was "Don't drive in Rome." Anyway, we picked Hertz because they have an office just across the street from the Conca D'Oro metro stop. It was far enough outside of central Rome that we didn't get into too much traffic and it was a very short walk to the metro (we actually got off the metro at the Colisseo stop and walked to our hotel from there). Depending on what car rental company you use, you may be able to do something similar and find one with an office close to public transit.

In Florence, we picked up our car on Via Borgo Ognissanti, and I think there are several car rental companies that have offices on that same street. It was pretty easy to get out of Florence from there, thanks to the GPS of course. Via Borgo Ognissanti wasn't that far a walk from our hotel, so it worked out well. We'll be going back to Florence this fall, but this time driving into the city. We however have opted to drop the car off at the airport rental office and take a taxi into the city from there. Since it would be a very long walk to our hotel from Via Borgo Ognissanti, we figured the airport made sense because we won't have to drive into the city and it should be easy enough to get a taxi there.

I hope this helps! Have a wonderful trip!
