Lots been said about FCO return, just want to share an alternative. Our rental allows either airport. We drove to Rome from Pompeii last week and on our way decided to try Ciampino when we happened to see the sign (about 30 miles before FCO). Very pleasantly surprised, it's small and easy, kind like Burbank airport vs LAX. All the rental companies share one small building and parking lot with shuttle to terminal and taxi stand. Public transportation seems not as convenient as FCO. However, we didn't want to deal with luggage and train so planned on taxi anyway. Turned out taxi cheaper than FCO, 30euro to town.
