car rental pick up and drop off locations from Venice to Rome

We are taking train to Venice for a couple of days in July then will spend a week in Tuscany/Umbria before returning to Rome. We planned to rent a car for the week in Tuscnay/Umbria. Is it best to pick up a car upon leaving Venice, if so where is best? and is it best to return car in Rome or travel back from our last destination which is Orieta by train? Where is the best places to pick up and drop off car for this route leaving Venice and eventually getting back to Rome?

Do you mean Orvieto? Not knowing your first destination in Tuscany, I’m assuming that you’re heading to Florence. I would not drive from Venice to Florence. If that is your first stop and you are spending any time visiting the city, you don’t want to get a car until you leave. If you are not visiting Florence, you might want to drive from Venice to your destination. The city of Ferrara, midway on your route, would be a worthwhile stop.

Orvieto only has a Hertz office so you will be limited as to choice of suppliers. If you use a different company, you could easily drive to Rome and return the vehicle to a rental office near Tiburtina RR station. If you are immediately leaving to fly home, consider returning car at the airport and staying at an airport hotel overnight.

You can check for either AutoEurope.com or Kemwel.com (sister companies) for rentals and rental office locations. Note that each driver needs an International Driver Permit in Italy. It’s also advisable to chose $0 deductible insurance.

Cost will probably not be the deciding factor, so do what feels most convenient. Taking the train on the same day that you're also paying for can rental can feel redundant. On the other hand, the price of major highway tolls and fuel can be similar to a second-class train ticket for the same route. Auto Europe hasn't been working with that Hertz office in Orvieto, so you may have to check rates directly with Hertz.
