Autoeurope.com has some fine rates, but they require payment in advance. I don't have a particular problem with that, but wonder how far in advance I should reserve. We require the car in mid-October, renting in Siena and dropping off in Orvieto. It seems terribly early to commit the cash now, but will cars be scarce the closer I get to my travel date? Also, someone in a post here recommended going with at least a compact-size car. Why is that? Thanks!
We booked last Fall for next week and paid in full; but you can cancel anytime without penalty so if you book and find a cheaper rate just cancel and rebook!

If it is just two of you and you aren't giants or taking lots of giagantic luggage, then the I would suggest getting the smallest car you will fit in. That would probably a Fiat Panda.
We have had three people with one carry on each and a smaller couple of bags in a Panda and were fine. Not a lot of leg room in the back but you kind of sit sideways.
