After taking a train from Vienna to Venice, this September, I would like to go four days in the dolomites and three days in the lake region and then down to Milan. Is this best done with a one-way rental car or can it be done without. Also, any suggestions on itinerary? Thank you.
You need to specify your itinerary with more detail to answer this question. What specific cites/towns? How many persons?
At this point , I don’t have any itinerary just a desire to see those two regions, and I was hoping to get some help as far as an itinerary actually. It’s just me and my wife. We like hiking and would like to do some day hikes in the Dolomites but not overnight trips. I would prefer basing out of one town in each region if that’s possible. And again, looking for suggestions here as well. Thank you.
Review the suggested itineraries in Rick's book(s) and come back with specific questions.
Or google up some tour companies and look at what they offer, you can just copy the tour you don't have to take theirs.
Hi Peter. Can be done with or without car. To do without car, one option is take train to Bolzano and then bus to Ortisei; beautiful town in Dolomites with good day hikes. Then bus back to Bolzano, train to Varenna on Lake Como, then 1 hour train back to Milan. Or you can rent a car which will give you much more flexibility, but also some expense and parking hassle. Have a great trip!
Thanks for the input everyone.
