We had planned to go from Vernazza to Nice July 7 by train. With the proposed rail strike I'm wondering about renting a car in Monterosso and driving to Ventimiglia. Has anyone done this or how long did it take those of you who have done something similar? It's best to be prepared even though the strike may not actually happen. I will also check the Viamichelin site for their recomendations.

I seriously doubt that there is any kind of car rental place in Monterosso. With rare exceptions, tourist cars are not even permitted in any of the five towns. The nearest car rental office could be La Spezia.
Please note that by contract agreements with the unions, essential train services remain operational during any strike. You can glean whatever you can from this message on the Trenitalia website (http://www.trenitalia.com/en/servizi_per/servizi_sciopero.html). Select Liguria. The train runs from La Spezia to Ventimiglia is an important run. There has to be some trains running there even if they are locals and you have to change trains once or twice.
