Search as I may I am having a hard time determining if I can actually rent a car in Montecatini? From all my research it looks like I would need to pick up in Florence, Sienna or Pisa. Has anyone rented a car in Montecatini? Thank you for any input as I am currently looking at just picking up a car in Florence.
I just go to Google Maps and look to see if there are any offices. It seems like there are some local agencies there, which you may or may not want to use. You could try AutoEurope--many recommend them. Share your itinerary and you can probably get more detailed advice.
Thank for your reply. The car rental agencies in Montecatini appear to be for long term rentals and commercial vans, unless I am missing something. Auto-Europe gives me "no results found" for the days we want a car in Montecatini (9/28-9/30).
We are based in Montecatini for 6 nights, so looking to rent a car for 2-3 days to drive around Tuscany as we are mostly interested in walking around the smaller towns. We had planned to visit Florence and Lucca by train for 2 day trips and I think that is all we really have time for.
We arrive in Milan and need to take a train down to Montecatini via Florence, so we thought we would just pick up a car in Florence, drive it for a couple days, drive it back for our day trip there and return it at that time. We need an automatic as I can't drive a stick, hubby can but we are alternating designated driver days.
."..we thought we would just pick up a car in Florence, drive it for a couple days, drive it back for our day trip there and return it at that time."
That appears to be your best bet. You'll have a better chance of reserving an automatic in Florence since the rental car concessions there have a much larger fleet of vehicles to choose from. Ensure that you do specify an automatic - the default rental will be a manual shifter as you may already know.
Pisa might be an option too if you plan to day trip there anyway. We rented from Avis at the Pisa airport, and getting onto the autostrada from there was very easy. No traffic, no ZTL's to worry about, and no hassles. Maybe you could arrange a one-way rental: picking it up in Florence and dropping it in Pisa.
Don't forget the IDP for both drivers.
Using AutoEurope (see websites I gave you in a previous post) pick up the car either downtown Florence or Florence Airport.
In the AutoEurope websites select FLORENCE ALL LOCATIONS to see where the best deal is.
Both downtown and airport will have automatic cars (but not in the Economy category, since they don't sell them much in that size category).
The airport location is great to go to Montecatini because the A11 freeway to Montecatini starts right at the airport. However picking up at the airport may be more expensive than downtown, and also requires you to go from the station to the airport by taxi or lightrail train. The taxi costs about 25 euro, the trolley only 1.70 euro per person (once at the airport terminal you take the car rental van to the car rental center, about 5 min from the terminal).
The downtown locations vary depending on which company you select (Hertz, Europcar, etc.), but they are all near the Firenze Santa Maria Novella station (Florence main station).
If you are in Montecatini, you can reach Lucca and Pistoia by car in 30-40 minutes (by train a bit longer). Pisa by train requires a change in Lucca, if you drive it's faster.
If you go to Siena from Montecatini, then it is best if you drive, because otherwise you'll be on trains and buses most of the day.
Thanks for the responses. I am now defiantly planning on pickup up in Florence by the train station as getting to the airport would just eat into our time and sounds like a hassle.
