All input is appreciated. My first trip to Italy, arriving in Rome. From there we are renting a car to tour through Tuscany and other spots and then ending in Venice.
I am looking for any advice on where to rent a car when leaving Rome to the north. Also any advice on type of car, recommended rental agency, GPS from home useability, etc. We are so looking forward to the trip! Thanks for all advice!
Last summer, like you, we rented a car on our way out of Rome and dumped it upon arrivel in Venice.
We booked through Sixt (a mini-van for our family of 5, with GPS included). We picked it up at the train station on Monday morning and had no trouble getting out of town. Unlike you, we were heading South, but I don't think that your heading North will make any significant difference.
Have fun!
For our first Italy trip leaving in 2 weeks, I did quite a bit of research and got lots of good advice here. You can rent GPS with car. We're buying GPS (preload with Europe map) here so can get familiar with the unit before leaving. I find "[email protected]" offer good rental rate. You can also try Kemwel. Havn't driven a manual for years, so I'm going with auto and a/c. With those 2 requirement, compact is out. Airport pick-up costs a bit more but avoids in-town driving. Kemwel sie gives quote online so you can check the prices of different features and locations. Also, don't forget the IDP. Hope this helps.
Another option is to take the train out of Rome 1-1/2 hour to Orvieto(or less) they have and Avis car rental there and Orvieto is right off the Auto Strada. Might not be as stressful as getting out of Rome.
