Car rental leaving Catania, Sicily for road trip

Hi fellow travelers,

My hubs and I are doing the Sicily tour ending in Catania during Nov. Following the tour, we want to rent a car and take a road trip starting up the toe of the boot, over to the east coast, swing around to Bologna, and then drop off at FCO (Rome). Trouble is, if we pick up the car in Catania, the drop-off fee is in the thousands!!!

What is the easiest way to get from Catania to the mainland (Avis is my car rental agency of choice) where drop-off fees are considerably less?

Thanks in advance for your advice.

How much time are you planning for this?

Can the trip be broken into train segments and car segments?

Besides the route, where are you planning on spending the nights?

You can take the bus, train, fly, or a ferry to many places from Catania.

Thanks Paul,
I had planned to rent the car in Catania, take it over the ferry and go for a slow drive up the boot stopping 3 times before landing in Bologna and then driving to Rome for the flight home. But the drop-off fee ($2,000+) caught me off-guard. I'm hoping there is a cheaper option available by getting to the mainland in the simplest way possible.
