Car rental La Spezia or montepulciano?

We are planning for a 2 week visit, with a week in an agriturismo near Montepulciano. we will be leaving CT to get there. Do we pick up a car in La Spezia, or train to MP and pick up a car in that area? Is there even a car rental office in MP or nearby? What should a basic car cost with all the taxes ins ect? I am so hyped about this trip. It started out as an anniversary gift for my wife, and it has quickly become a blast for me as well, just doing the planning. thanks for the help. JCM

You can make a better decision for yourself on this, than we can make for you, by doing 3 things:

  1. Go to AutoEurope and/or other car rental websites and determine where the pick up locations are that are nearest your agriturismo, note days closed and hours (it's not like here, weekend hours may surprise you).

  2. Consult this map, which will assist you in accomplishing step 1

Google Map

  1. Remember that most American travelers to Italy find that their enjoyment and relaxation is greater if they limit their driving to the Tuscany countryside and don't unnecessarily drive into the cities or other places well served by rail.

After you've done the above, you'll be able to make a better decision for yourself than we can make for you.

Jeff,
Montepulciano does not have a train station or a car rental agency. The station called Montepulciano is quite a distance from the town and not on a main line.
Chiusi is the closest town with a rail station and car rental agency.

After a little research I am thinking pickup in La Spezia, and drop off in Chiusi. I say this because we are going to Venice from Tuscany, and Chiusi seems like the closest train station. On to another question, We have decided to train from Venice to milan to pick up a flight home, because the cost of flying from Venice was very high. Actually we wont save allot by going to Milan, but it gives us another day, and ride across Italy. Our flight is at 10:10 In Milan, can we stay in town as opposed to around the airport and SAFELY make it to our flight? Thanks, Jeff Masters

Listen to Kent,Auto Europe is the best, don't drive in the big cities,if you do which I did, picking up the car in Rome driving it through Tuscany for a week and then dropping it off in Firenze was a hell of a trip,Tuscany was fine getting out of Rome and into Firenze were awful but that is the price you pay for your own car but I would do it the same next time.
