Greetings! I am considering renting a car in Turin to see the countryside of Piedmont and am looking for suggestions, advice, and anything to help me decide if this is a viable option. I am looking for a boots-on-the-ground experience, not travel guide advice which I have already read. Thank you!
Last June I picked up a rental car a short walk from the Milan Central railway station, and drove to Aosta. I used Aosta as a base for day trips to some of the castles, towns and hikes in the region. The area is breathtakingly beautiful and, at least in early June, crowd-free. Roads were very good to excellent. One shock was the very expensive tolls on the autoroute- about €40 for the trip from Milan to Aosta. However, once we were in Aosta, we stuck mostly to the toll-free local roads and found they provided a more interesting experience. We dropped the car off at the Turin airport and took an express bus from there to Turin, as I didn’t want to drive into the city. That worked well, and once in town I was glad I avoided Turin traffic. Favourite stops were the town of Courmayeur, the Fenis and Issogne castles, hiking in the Lillaz valley, and the Sacra di San Michele close to Turin.
We rented a car near the Turin rail station in 2019. About 3/4 mile away. We found the roads easy to navigate. I would rent the smallest car that can accommodate you as parking is minimal and streets are narrow in villages. Our home base for five days was Barolo.
