Would like to rent a car for a day in Siena - picking up in the morning and dropping off before the office closes. Any rental agency suggestions? And ... is it more expensive to rent a car THERE, than it is to rent it in advance here in the States? I know about the permit and I know about the insurance, but don't know the above. Thanks much ! Dianne, I'd probably arrange the car rental before leaving home, and that way there will be a vehicle waiting for you. In the same situation, I'd talk to a Travel Agent and have them make the arrangements. I have rented cars on a "whim", but in those cases I usually ask the hotel staff to make the arrangements as they know who the reliable firms are in that area, and can deal with them in the local language. It's generally cheaper to make arrangements ahead of time from the US, rather than walking to a rental place on a whim.

Thanks ! good idea to ask the hotel staff, as one of the three days could be a "driving" day, but not sure. We have a wine tour one day; Siena one day; SG one day (of which we may want to venture elsewhere before going to SG -- reason for the car). Thanks much !
