We would like to take the train from Venice to Poggibonsi. We are renting a villa outside of town for a few days in Tuscany.
We want to rent a car in Poggibonsi to get to our villa and around Tuscany but we are having difficulty finding a rental in Poggibonsi. We only find them in Florence. We could get off the train in Florence and rent but we'd have to shuttle from the train station to the airport to rent the car.
Does anyone know of a reputable rental in Poggibonsi or have other suggestions? We are looking at a compact or family sized car comfortable for 4 adults.
A search in Italian turns up this company http://www.nolcar.it/ with an office in Poggibonsi. They say they are the largest in commercial rentals in Italy, and their fleet includes compacts.
You could also rent in Venice and return in Florence at the airport.
The most sensible way to do it would be to rent in Venice (Piazzale Roma) and drive all the way to your villa. The drive to Poggibonsi is all freeway driving and it won't take longer than 3 hours. For 4 people that would be even cheaper than 4 train tickets.
Enter the freeway at Mestre. Follow directions on the freeway to the following order:
PADOVA
BOLOGNA
FIRENZE
Exit the freeway at FIRENZE IMPRUNETA exit. Pay toll at the booth and follow directions to SIENA. Poggibonsi is along the way to Siena. If you tell me the exact address of the villa I'll tell you the name of the exit.
If you don't feel comfortable driving from Venice to Poggibonsi all on a 4 to 8 lane freeway, then you should reconsider renting a car altogether.
Roberto - so the mountain driving (if there is any) isn't a big deal? We only had 2 thoughts with the driving 1) we heard the driving is crazy in Italy but this sounds like it's all freeway. Maybe others are talking about the city driving 2) we just thought the train would be more relaxing. We will have 3 people so 3 train tickets, though, so that's a good point.
