Hi- I'm interested in input on where to pick up a rental car. We fly in to Florence arriving in the late morning and head directly to Montepulciano. We'll travel around Tuscany for a week or so, then return to Florence for a few days sightseeing. We will drop the car before entering Florence. Thanks!
I would think the easiest option for pick-up is at the airport that you just arrived into.
Airport pickup and return.
Just watch for signs indicating ZTLs in the bigger cities kike Volterra and Siena. They are easy to spot.
The roads throughout Tuscany are well paved and marked well. They are just a little bit curvy.
Pick up at the airport.
The return can be somewhere more convenient in the city.
The rental locations on Borgo Ognissanti (a street in the city center) are probably closest to your hotel.
If you rent from Hertz and are arriving from Montepulciano, there is a very convenient Hertz office on Via Giorgio Ambrosoli, next to the Ponte di Varlungo (Bridge), now also called Ponte Paolo Borsellino.
Coming from Montepulciano on the A1 freeway, you would exit at FIRENZE SUD (first Florence exit). After paying toll at the booth go straight on the Marco Polo expressway all the way to the bridge. The expressway ends after you cross the bridge. At the light, turn right. Hertz is there next to the Toyota dealership. No city driving with this location. Once you return the car, ask them to call you a taxi to take you to your Florence hotel.
