Car rental in Florence drop off in Rome

We're considering renting a car in Florence and driving to our accommodation near Pienza. We will use the car to explore Tuscany and then drop it in Rome before the next leg of our trip. I'm nervous about navigating a route leaving Florence and I'm also nervous about navigating to drop the car off in Rome.

Does anyone have advice on where to pick up and drop off that will be easy and avoid driving in the cities?

Pick up in Borgo Ognissanti Road and drop the car off in the underground parking at the Villa Borghese Park.
Or pick up at Florence airport and drop close to Roma Termini or Roma Tiburtina. You could also drop off in Orvieto and take a train to Rome, but check carefully the opening times.

Have you already googled, printed out and memorised the ZTL sign?

@dario, thanks for the information. We will familiarize ourselves with the ztls and any other road signs, driving rules etc.

Orvieto only has Hertz
Chiusi is another good drop off spot Avis/Budget- close to Pienza

Closed on Sunday, closes by 12/ 1 on Saturday
Closed midday
As are most smaller locations

All drivers must have an IDP

We always book with AutoEurope.com

A few searches here on forum will turn up loads of info- this topic comes up frequently

The Florence Airport complex is at Via Palagio degli Spini, best reached by taxi. I would return to the chosen agency [through Autoeurope] on Via Sardegna in Rome. The problem with a Chiusi return is that if you leave Pienza before 8AM you are in Rome before the train leaves. Plus you would have to add enough time to drive there, return the car and be in the station 15 minutes ahead of the train. Orvieto is worse because it’s further away and the same train.

Where is the next leg of your trip? Is it Rome proper or will you continue onward immediately?

We opted for convenience over speed with a similar itinerary to you and rented from Avis-Budget in Chiusi, also returning there. Yes it was a little less time efficient than driving from Florence but it was less driving overall and even with the extra (but very inexpensive) train tickets it was still cheaper due to not having a one way rental.

I will second the idea to just rent and return in Chuisi. It is right on the main rail line between Florence and Rome, and close to Pienza. Solves all of your concerns about navigating Florence and Rome, and maybe cheaper.

Do be aware, almost every town in Tuscany has ZTLs, so traffic is diverted around, or you park outside the city center and walk or bus in.

Thanks for the suggestions.
I looked on Autoeurope. When I put Chuisi in their system for pick up, the website doesn't recognize it. What am I doing wrong?
