Car rental in Florence - drop in in la Spezia

Can you recommend which car rental company is best to use?
Also are we better off renting at airport vs rail area? All the talk on traffic fines make me nervous in Florence.. We are driving to Greve and then onto Cinque Terre. Is it easy to catch rail from La Spezia car rental drop offs to Riomaggiore?

Kaye, except for driving to certain parking lots and hotels, tourist cars are not permitted in the Cinque Terre. You won't find any car rental places there. The closest you will find is in La Spezia. For Greve, you can take a very nice bus to and from Florence. You are very wise to be wary of the traffic fines in Florence. The entire historic area is in one of the various Zona Traffico Limitados. They get your license plate with cameras.

Anytime you rent a car at any airport, it's going to come with tariffs and taxes that you will not get in a city location. There are numerous city car rental locations, and they can give you directions to your destination without going near any ZTL's. See Hertz.com and AutoEurope.com. I got a Hertz car in Florence though it was rented thru AutoEurope at a lower rate. If going to the Cinque Terre, I would be taking the train to La Spezia and a local train into the C/T.
If you're using a car to travel throughout Tuscany to the hilltop cities, etc., a rental car is the way to go.
