We will be in Florence in September for 2 days and then we are going to Tuscany for 3 days. We want to rent a car when we leave Florence - any ideas?
WE rented with Autoeurope and picked up our car on Borgo Ognissanti. We took the "A" electrobus to Piazza D'ognissanti, walked a few blocks to the rental agency. Leaving town was to drive to Sienna was easy. We saw no Zona Traffico Limitato signs on the way out.
There's been extensive discussion of this exact issue: in the search box, upper right, search on "florence car rental". Bottom line is: pick up at a place where you're sure you will be able to avoid the restricted driving zone when leaving Florence and when returning the car. It's not clear to most of us where the zones are, exactly, in a way that can be described to someone in words. Some veteran travelers are no longer picking up or returning rental cars in Florence, because of this problem and the chaotic traffic conditions in Florence. But a few incredibly daring and resourceful travelers say: no problem driving in the Florence city center, we did it and you can too! Note: Some of these daring souls blithely recommending driving rental cars into the center of Italian cities have been back less than a year and thus their jury is still out on whether they will be receiving their $150 fines in the mail in the forthcoming months.
