We need to rent a car in Florence, and return it to Rome a week later - and wondered about a reliable on line company to use for this. Would like to pick it up and drop it off at the train stations in these cities.
We picked up our rental car at Florence airport and chose to return it in Orvieto and take train to Rome. Had no problems. We used Hertz. My husband will correct me if this is the wrong company.

The above are consolidators that will get you a car from the major companies often at a lower price than going directly.
Just to let you know Florence train station has no rental car locations. All companies are located however nearby on a street called Borgo Ognissanti or Via Maso da Finiguerra (which is at the corner with Borgo Ognissanti). Choose those locations if you want to pick up near the station.
In Rome there are rental offices at both main stations: Roma Termini and Roma Tiburtina.
Roma Tiburtina is easier to drive to, since it's near the freeway exit. Roma Termini is closer to the historical center.
gayle,
Be VERY careful to avoid the dreaded Zona Traffico Limitato areas which are prevalent in most towns in Italy (especially Florence), as you'll be subject to hefty fines if you pass through these areas. You may find it helpful to read THIS article or the articles on THIS website which cover both ZTL areas and the need for out-of-country drivers in Italy to have an International Driver's Permit.
Happy travels!

Just a word of warning. I am usually pretty good about driving in different locations, Ireland, NYC but I will never again drive in Italy (or at least the cities) because fo the Traffic Limited Zones. Pick the car up at the airport in Florence, someone suggested it on this sight & I did not listen. I was fine getting out of Florence but coming back in, it cost me $750. It only took me 10 minutes to rack up this damage.
