I am reading about the large number of traffic violations sent out to drivers in Florence. Our plan is to rent a car in Florence to drive through Tuscany for a week, ending in Rome. Are there any suggestions of where specifically to rent a car in Florence, such as an area of town that is easy to navigate out of, since we will just drive away from Florence.
While renting a car from a Florence location and escaping the city without incident shouldn't be that hard with a good map, I would suggest taking the bus or train to Siena in the morning, strolling the city during the day, and then picking up your car from there (there is a Hertz, and probably others, right by the train station) and leaving town to your next destination. It's pretty easy to exit Siena on any of the main roads without mistakenly entering the old city center. Most of Tuscany lies within two hours drive of Siena.
I've picked up from agencies on the Borgo Ognissaniti which is a straight shot out of town. Others recommend picking up at the airport which is a short bus ride from the train station. You'll need an International Drivers Permit to accompany your state drivers license in Italy.
I returned a car at the Florence airport after using it to drive around Tuscany. It would be very simple to do that in reverse. There is an express bus from the train station to the airport. It costs 5€ per person. The airport is right off the highway. I recommend using a GPS for driving around Tuscany. Familiarize yourself with road signs, especially the signs for ZTL's!
