Car rental in Florence

There isn’t much of a danger of entering the ZTL on the way out of the city center (whether Borgo Ognissanti or Via Alamanni or Piazza della Stazione depending on which company you use). Cameras are placed at entry points not when you exit.

Returning the car to the city center may present some danger but I’ve posted instructions on how to return the car safely. However consider that the downtown locations close early (generally at 7:30pm) so returning the car to the airport may be the way to go if you return it after closing time (the airport rental center closes at midnight). We have rented in Florence several times and haven't had an issue with the ZTL. They have always told us how to get to and from the rental agency on Borgo Ognissanti to avoid it. One time we weren't sure if we mistakenly drove through it, so they said they would make a call so there wouldn't be a fine. We never did hear from anyone.
