I'm planning to rent a car for a portion of my Italy trip. From Florence, I'll be taking the train to CT (quick pitstop at Pisa) for 2 nights. After CT, I intend to make my way to Siena but am strongly considering stopping over at Lucca for a quick 1/2 or 1/4 day tour (Maybe just rent a bicycle and ride round the walls). So should I: 1) Pickup the rental car at La Spezia and drive to Lucca (having to check bags at Lucca's TI before parking - I'd prefer not to leave the bags in the car at the carparks)? or
2) Train to Lucca and check bags at the TI, then proceed to tour Lucca before picking rental car up in Lucca? Thoughts?

Definitely go to Lucca. We had only a couple of hours and I wish we could spend the entire day there. We looked at trains versus driving from CT and wound up driving. Lucas seems pretty safe to me but I understand reservation about leaving bags in a car anywhere.

We're traveling to Lucca from Florence, and decided to pick up the car in Lucca. We're using the Hertz office in the AAA building.
