We will be renting a car when we leave Florence and driving to Siena. We want to avoid any driving in the city of Florence. Is our best bet to rent the car from the airport and get on the highway as soon as possible? The airport is in the opposite direction of our travel to Siena, but if that is the best option that is OK. Or are there any specific outskirts south of Florence that I should be looking at for car rental. Thank you so much for any recommendations you can give us.

Renting at the airport is easy but not really necessary
You can rent from any of the train station agencies and follow Roberto’s directions in this thread

We are renting when we arrive to the florence area (by train) - picking up our car at the ‘Florence central station/ Santa Maria novella’ (Sixt) which seems pretty straightforward in terms of driving out of town.
