We are a family of six, my husband and I, and our 4 kids, ages 19, 17, 14 & 7 yrs of age. After Sorrento, we plan to drive to a place in San Donato(near San Gimignano) in Tuscany.
We want to rent a car for the week that we will be in this area. Where would be the best place to pick up and drop off a rental car? After Tuscany we are going to Venice, so would like to get rid of our car before we go there. Also, any suggestions on a reasonable auto that could accommodate our family? A van or SUV? Any good car rental agencies that you can recommend? Thanks in advance for your help!

Yes, you're going to want a van. Check Autoeurope.com for a selection of vehicles and pick up locations. I would pick up in Tuscany because you do not want to drive from Sorrento through Naples and around Rome (although it wouldn't be awful on the Autostrade). So look at picking up in Orvieto or Chiusi.
Since you'll already have the vehicle, I'd just plan to drive it to Venice and drop there. Venice has only one road going in and it ends at the parking garage where the rental agencies are located. You can go the whole way on the Autostrade.

We are going to Italy in two weeks. After Sorrento we are taking a train to Orvieto to rent a car and then touring Tuscany. You do not want to drive through Rome.
