We'd like to rent a car to visit several hill towns near Assisi and use Assisi as our home base. (We want to avoid large city traffic as much as possible.) We would be coming from Rome by train. Does anyone have a suggestion of a smaller town at which to leave the train and pick up a rental car (someplace that's fairly easy to get in and out of)? Thanks!

A lot of people here suggest Orvieto. You could also pick up from the airport - longer hours, more cars.

We have picked up and returned cars in Perugia, one hilltown over from Assisi. The rental car place is right next to the rail station. Its not the smallest town in the world so you have to navigate a few streets, but not hard to do. I definitely recommend bringing a portable GPS, in which case it will be a cinch.
