We are needing to hire a car from Florence to drop off at Hertz in La Spezia. Has anyone used this location? How hard is it to get from there with luggage to the train station? Have you used a drop box to leave the keys when they are closed?

The La Spezia Centrale station is 3.2 km (2 miles) away, so not really walking distance especially with luggage, therefore ask the Hertz staff at the desk to summon a taxicab for you when you return the car.
If you return the car after hours and therefore no Hertz personnel is available, then you can call the taxi yourself. The information is below:

If you don’t have a phone with an Italian SIM card the best option is to get a Google Voice Number before you leave. I use Google Voice to make calls to Italian landlines (including while in Italy). You can use Google Voice overseas, but if you don’t have a Google Voice number already, you must sign up and open an account with a Google Voice number while in the US. The cost of calls to Italian numbers using Google Voice is one cent per minute. If you make a regular call from your cell phone without using Google Voice, your cell phone provider will charge you for that call as an international call to Italy, and it is not cheap no matter which provider you have.
