we'll be arriving in Florence by train on Wed. Sept 4 and hope to rent a car (automatic) for one week to complete our travel.
is it easy to rent a car at Florence train station?

The closest rental car locations are on Borgo Ognissanti, a 3.5 block walk from the train station. You'll want to reserve ahead for an automatic. I've had good luck using Autoeurope for car rentals in Italy. They're located in Maine.

thank you.....would you know how far from Florence train station by train to Florence airport (if we wanted to rent our car at the airport)

The airport is about 4km from the train station. The new T2 tram goes to the airport in 20 minutes, but the rental car locations aren't on the airport property and you would need to take a shuttle. With luggage in tow, it would probably be easier to take a taxi directly to the airport rental car location. There's also a Hertz location on Via Sansovino, across the river and reachable by T1 tram or taxi.
