Car Rental Florence

If you're looking for someplace closer with several rental options you could look into Arezzo. Train from Florence to Arezzo, check out Arezzo and then rent a car near the train station. Avis and Budget are right across the piazza from the train station and there are other options as well. It would be about a 30 minute drive from there to Castiglion Fiorentino and you should be out of Arezzo in 5 or so of those minutes.

One concern is if you rent and return into the same place you'll need to train to Rome (and onto Naples) from there. Arezzo has a couple of fast trains to Rome a day but not with the 3-4/hour frequency of Florence. The Intercity and slow trains are about 3 hours so it's not terrible but if you're rushing off to the AC you may want faster trains. You could also see about driving south and returning at Chiusi and training onto Rome from there.

It's an option and Arezzo is well worth checking out even if you don't rent there.

I agree that Arezzo is the best option, especially with Avis-Budget, which has the office across the station.
I drove from Arezzo to Castiglion F.no (and back) a few weeks ago and I don’t think it took me more than 20 min or so.
The fastest trains from Arezzo to Salerno probably require backtracking to Florence to catch a Frecciarossa, unless you leave very early (before 8) when there is a FR from Arezzo to Naples. The options through Rome otherwise are generally or Regionali or IC and take over one hour longer.

Driving south to Chiusi and returning the car at the Avis-Budget there to catch the train from Chiusi won’t save you much time compared to backtracking to Arezzo for the 20 min drive then taking the train from Arezzo. But it is up to you as most trains from Arezzo to Rome stop in Chiusi.

Avis Budget is the only rental office in Chiusi, so if you intend to rent in Arezzo and take the train from Chiusi, that is the only rental office in town.

Thanks for your replies. Unfortunately we will be dropping the car off on a Sunday and the rental car locations in both places are closed on Sunday.

Then the only option is change the drop off date, or drive all the way to Salerno on Sunday. However also in that case the Salerno offices may be closed on Sundays, therefore you'll need to keep the car parked at your hotel or nearby in Amalfi for one night before returning the car in Salerno or Sorrento the next morning. The latter is the option I would choose if you cannot change the date of your car return to the next day Monday in Arezzo.

The other alternative would be to drive to Naples return the car in Naples (at the airport, which is always open), then find alternative transportation options from the NAP airport to Amalfi, which are basically two options:
1. Take a private transfer (limo service) from the airport for over €100 or
2. Take a taxi to the Napoli Centrale-Porta Garibaldi station, then a Circumvesuviana commuter train to Sorrento. That option is less than €50 all inclusive, but varying depending on the number of travelers, hence the number of train tickets necessary.

Check to see if either location offers after hours drop off
We avoid doing that but could be an option

Or drive to Salerno to spend Sunday night, return car in the am before taking ferry to Amalfi

The only car rental agencies that will be open on Sunday are at airports
Dropping at FCO or FLR will just add more time and expense to the trip

Maybe giving up an expensive nite in Amalfi for a cheaper nite in Salerno is a better solution
