We will be arriving to Florence by train. My understanding is that there is no car rental agency at the train station. We have a family of 5 traveling. Any suggestions on where to best rent a car and how to best get there from train station? Also, is it as crazy as I hear to get out of Florence once we get our rental car? (We are staying about 20 min south of Florence).

There are no rental agencies at the train station that is quite cramped, but due to historic reasons almost all rentals are in the Borgo Ognissanti area and nearby streets, 5/7 minutes walking from the station.
Another easy solution, if you have some luggage and you do not want to walk, is taking the tram from the station (side exit at via Alamanni, tram tickets at the tobacconist inside the station) to the Sansovino stop, where there is a rental agency + parking just in front of the tram stop.
Getting out of Florence is not crazy, as ZTL entrances are monitored but exits are not. Be sure you understand to the letter the instructions for returning your car, as half of Borgognissanti is in the ZTL zone and if you do not follow instructions you risk a fine. The Sansovino area is not in the ZTL and access is free.
