Car Rental - Extending Duration after arrival

I will have a rental car when I visit Italy this spring. I am told that I will be able to extend the duration of the rental if I decide I would like to keep the car a couple of extra days but that I will need to arrange this at the initially agreed upon drop off point and that the extra days will be more expensive then my initial rental agreement. Any ideas about how much more expensive this will be. I expect to use one of the retal companies listed in Rick's Italy tour book.

Might be best to question the rental firms(s) directly, since their policies may differ. But generally speaking, they'll charge you the full daily rate for the day or two extra you want to keep it. If some companies have three or four-day rates, they'll charge you that if you keep it that much longer. In fact, in some cases, it may be cheaper to rent it for that longer term (if better rates are available) then simply turn it in early.

I really like Autoeurope and they provide a toll-free 24/7 number to use in Europe. When I had a change in France I contacted them and they took care of it for me. They advised me to work directly with them and my rates were good.
