Car Rental Drop Off - Verona or Venice

Hi Italy Travel Board- Advice needed. We have a rental car booked currently with a pick up at the train station in Verona and returning Verona. We are returning on a Sunday and while Auto Europe let us book it this way it did state that the rental office would be closed. We had planned on dropping the car there and training to Venice. Do you think it would be better to drop the car at either the Verona or Venice airport that are both open that day? If we drop at the Verona airport looks like we could take a shuttle to the train station but it seems out of the way. I looked at it seems that all the local offices in Verona and train station are all closed on a Sunday. With all the negative things I hear about renting cars in Italy I was somewhat worried about the drop off at a closed location. If you have any experience with car rental in these areas let me know what you think.

The Venice option makes more sense timewise, but If your husband is afraid of driving on straight, divided freeways to an International airport I doubt he should drive in the countryside on two lanes roads.

If you are renting with Hertz, their office in front of Padua's Ikea Store should be open on Sundays.

Hi Dario- Thanks for your response. My husband has driven in several different countries even on the different side of the road but he normally prefers to avoid inner city driving. From the map the highway E70 from Lake Garda where we will be coming from went through several towns. Perhaps the road doesn’t go through but around them. If that is the case he should be fine. No the car was not with Hertz. They didn’t have a down town Verona pick up. Our options were Alamo & Europcar. Neither have a office open on Sunday. Also the Venice drop off locations were limited hence the airport drop off.

Sixt in Verona station is open 6 days plus Sundays 9-1. Sixt in Venice P.Le Roma is open all day every day.

Have you looked at Sixt? They are one of Europe's biggest (and from my friends, best).

I don't know what the E70 is and, like most Italian signs, I am too old to start using new names because of Google Maps and the EU. Assuming you are talking about the A22 and the A4 highways, like all controlled-access Italian highways they go around cities.

Thank you Dario and Nigel. Great thoughts. I will do a bit more research but I am leaning towards dropping it in Venice seeing as we are heading that way anyway. Thanks again

Dropping a car at the Venice airport is easy, but the airport is not in Venice, so you still have the problem of getting yourselves to Venice. Isn’t there are possibility for dropping a rental at Piazzale Roma?
We once did a drop off at a closed location. I worried a lot about that. It worked fine, but I still wouldn’t recommend it. I like to get a document showing no damage and a filled up fuel tank. Another thought, could you drop off the car in Verona on Saturday?

Hi Rosalyn- we thought about changing our itinerary but we are flying out of Venice and we would have to cut another location short to drop on the Saturday.

Are you headed to Venice to catch a flight upon returning the car, or are you planning to stay in Venice a few days?

If you plan to stay in Venice a few days, then you should return the car at Piazzale Roma in Venice. That location is always open.

Hi Roberto- We are planning on staying in Venice for four nights. Leaving it at Piazzle Roma is a great idea but none of the car rental companies that are a option for us seem to have their office open at the Piazzle Roma on a Sunday. I am left with airports it seems if I want to drop the car with a actual human. Leaving it with no one there makes me extremely nervous.

I hadn't realized that Sixt would be a problem. Sorry.

Hey Nigel! I forgot to get back to you. Actually Sixt is the only one that isn’t a problem but for the $390 more they are charging for the same car as others I think I will figure something else out and stick with Hertz, Avis, or Europcar. That was a good idea though!
