We are renting a car in Chiusi and Caserta. How far in advance should we reserve one? We are renting in July.

It really does not matter--the earlier the better if you need to secure an automatic.

Auto Europe will apply any special they announce to your already made reservation if you ask them

We reserved last week for our July rental. If you go through Auto Europe, the price tends to go up as your rental date becomes closer. As previously mentioned, if the price drops before your intended date, they will apply the discount.

I rented a couple weeks ago for mid-May from Auto Europe/Hertz, 2 days at Naples Airport to drive to Calabria and back.
Don’t know what days you need but many rental places close early on Saturday and are closed Sunday.

For car rental in Italy, it's important to note that each driver listed on the rental form will require the compulsory International Driver's Permit, which is used in conjunction with your home D.L. The permits are easily available at any AAA / CAA office for a small fee. You'll also have to be vigilant to avoid ZTL (limited traffic) areas, as hefty fines will result for each incursion.
