Car rental cinque terra destination cueno

Looking to get from cinque terra to cueno for 2 nights then drive to Busto Arsizio for tour of town and Basilica S Giovanni then continue on to Varenna for 2 nights.
Thinking of taking the train to Genoa to pick up a car on a Saturday and drive to cuneo. Not sure where best place to get the car. I have been told I will need to go to genoa airport because it is a Saturday and the in town rental is closed.

I would also like to turn in the car before going to varenna but not sure where the best place would be to get transportation to varenna?

Any advice?

Varenna is easily reached by train from Milan.

You can pick up car at Genoa airport and drop off at Milan train station ( Milano Centrale) and get on train to Varenna

Note that for driving in Italy, each driver listed on the rental form must have the compulsory International Driver's Permit, which is used in conjunction with your home D.L. These are valid for one year, and easily obtained at any CAA/AAA office (two Passport-sized photos required, which may be provided by the issuing office).

You'll also have to be vigilant to avoid the dreaded Zona Traffico Limitato (limited traffic) areas that are becoming increasingly prevalent in many Italian towns & cities especially Florence, which is almost saturated with automated ZTL cameras. EACH PASS through one of the automated Cameras will result in a €100+ ticket, which you won't know about until several months after you return home!

Thank you

Do you know if the train from cinque terra goes to the airport in genoa? That could work.
On the drop off...
I found that Lecco near Lake Como had a hertz location. Not sure how to get from Lecco to Varenna?

You can take a train. When we went to Varenna from Bergamo, we switched trains in Lecco. It's only 20-30 minutes away from Varenna-Esino station, and tickets (2nd-class regionale) currently cost 2,90 euro.

I'd take a train to Cuneo and rent there to avoid the long and boring drive along the coast up to Savona and then through the Alps. The same journey on a train is quite interesting.
It doesn't seem you want to roam around to visit tiny villages far from the tourists' path (and the railway lines); you already know all your destinations, so why driving?
Did you check realistic driving times, tolls and gas costs on viamichelin.com?

Genoa airport is not served by train. Buses from the main train stations to the airport take about 30 minutes.

Picking up a car in Cuneo would be difficult on your schedule, since most agencies appear to be open Saturday mornings only, not Sunday (as usual) and they're not terribly close to the train station. Closer to the Cinque Terre in La Spezia, GoogleMaps shows Hertz and Maggiore agencies open Saturday morning (but not Avis). Confirm when booking.

Of course, all of your destinations are served by train, but with a couple of connections on each leg.
