We are looking to rent a car when we leave Florence to drive thru some of the hill towns that have been recommended. Would like to return it either in Orvieto or Rome. Can someone tell me where to get car in Florence (my husband is having trouble with this). Also.. is it possible to return in Orvieto? If not... where in Rome do you suggest? We will stay the last night in Rome before we head back to the States. Thanks a lot. (I do hotels and airfare and he does cars!)
I did it the opposite way, renting in Orvieto and returning in Florence. People do it all the time. We returned our car at the Florence airport, then took the express bus to the train station. You could do it in reverse by taking the bus to the airport if you choose to rent there. I use AutoEurope to rent cars. On their website you put in your desired pick up and drop off cities and then you are given the option of locations in the city. You may find a place in town to pick the car up, but beware of the ZTL's because you don't want to drive in one.
We rented a car in Florence to drive into and around Tuscany and just got it from Budget. It was located in the city, so it was "interesting" to get out of the city and will test your navigational skills but it was cheaper to get it there than the airport, though the airport is probably easier for driving. We went ahead and drive it into Rome and dropped off near the Borghese Gallery. It wasn't too far into the really hectic part of the city and seemed no crazier than driving out of Florence. Same thing here it was cheaper to drop here than the airport or train station, so we took our chances with the traffic. We also looked into dropping in Orvieto, but it was more expensive (at least for our timing)and the days/hours of operation were much more restrictive. We also looked at Avis, which was right near Budget, but Budget was cheaper at the time.
Go thru AutoEurope.com and they'll probably book you a Hertz car since you're turning the car into Orvieto. (Hertz is across the street from the Orvieto train station.) I picked my car up at Hertz' 53 Via del Sansovino location, two miles from the Florence train station. They gave me directions to the south without getting close to the ZTL. It takes just over an hour to get into Rome from Orvieto.
If you need info on Rome, see RonInRome.com for what to do and where to stay.
If dropping in Orvieto, be aware of their drop off hours on the weekend
Linda, Don't forget the compulsory International Driver's Permit for each driver, and be careful to avoid the dreaded ZTL areas as you leave Florence. A GPS along with a good map would be prudent. Orvieto is a convenient drop-off location, as it's so close to Rome. Happy travels!
thank you all so much! I will give this info to my husband. This is for when we go next March/April. THanks again! Linda
David, Did you have any difficulties leaving the city from that pickup? Did you take taxi to the car rental place? Thanks.
